Moving With a Cat: A Vet-Informed Stress-Reduction Plan

Cats experience the world through scent

A cat's home is less a place than a *scent map*. Every sofa, baseboard and you carry a familiar odor that tells a cat "this is safe." Moving erases that map overnight — which is why cats commonly hide, stop eating, or protest with spraying after a relocation. Understanding this reframes the problem: your job is to rebuild the scent map as fast as possible, not just move the furniture.

The two-week plan

1–2 weeks before:

• Keep a pheromone-style diffuser running in the old home so the calming signal is already familiar.
• Pack gradually; don't upend the cat's core territory all at once.

Moving day:

• Move the cat last, in a secure carrier, with a blanket that smells like home.
• Set up one quiet room in the new place *first* — litter, food, water, the diffuser, and that home-smelling blanket.

First 1–2 weeks after:

• Keep the cat in that single room until it's eating, using the litter, and relaxed — then expand access room by room.
• Run the diffuser continuously; allow 1–2 weeks to judge effect.

Pheromone-style diffusers add a constant, species-appropriate calming signal back into a disrupted environment. They're not sedatives — they reduce the background tension that feeds hiding and spraying. Most cats benefit when the unit runs continuously in the room they use most, not just plugged in for a day.
